School Rehabilitations

School rehabilitations are offered as an element of Strategy 2.c Build on Past Community Investments, in Anna Read's excellent Putting Smart Growth to Work in Rural Communities http://icma.org/ruralsmartgrowth report.

I used to live in Albuquerque, NM and the old Albuquerque High School downtown became The Lofts at Albuquerque High, an attractive and successful mixed use complex. See for yourself: http://www.abqhigh.com/

Any other communities want to share examples of converted educational facilities?

A good resource for school rehabilitation is the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Their publication, "Helping Johnny Walk to School" might have some good ideas: http://www.preservationnation.org/issues/historic-schools/helping-johnny-walk-to-school/.

I'd be interested to hear from other communities who have successfully rehabilitated or converted educational facilities.

Stephanie, excellent suggestion. ICMA really needs to form a content partnership with the Trust. They have some great material.

Here is another example I found created a senior living complex from an old high school in Louisiana: http://www.preservationnation.org/main-street/main-street-news/story-of-the-week/2010/hope-vi-brings-senior-housing.html
