Have any of you local government agencies developed an informal mentoring program? If so, what does it consist of? What is the cost? What are the benefits to your employees? Thanks so much for sharing info!

Hi Heather - I'm not sure this fits the definition of informal, but I've attached a resource document in the hope it's helpful to you. In San Jose we've had a mentoring program for many years, and it has typically run twice a year. Please let me know if you have any questions; I can also get you Word docs if you'd like to modify any of this to your needs. Good luck! - Ed

Thank you so much, Mr. Shikada! I appreciate you taking time out to respond to my query. I'll review and be in touch. Thanks again.
Good afternoon, Mr. Shikada and thanks again so much for the info. What was the approximate cost to the City to develop this Citywide Mentoring Program?
Edward Shikada
Hi Heather, my apology for my slow response. I don't believe we budgeted separately for this program. It's been in place for about 8 years, is staff-developed, and has evolved over that time. The participants are all volunteers, and while originally led by an analyst, due to cutabacks it's now managed by an administrative assistant in our office who probably spends 1/4 or less of her time on it. It's a very popular program. Hope this helps!
