Download: Local Governments and Schools: A Community-Oriented Approach (PDF, 876 Kb, 40 pages)
School facilities and related infrastructure have a significant, long-term impact on the communities they serve in terms of not only quality of education but also the economy, the environment, and social equity. This report provides local governments and school districts with an understanding of the connections between school facility planning and local government concerns. It offers strategies for how local governments and schools can bring their respective planning efforts together to take a more community-oriented approach to schools and reach multiple community goals—educational, environmental, economic, social, and fiscal. Eight case studies illustrate how communities across the U.S. have already succeeded in collaborating to create more community-oriented schools.
