This article describes how the Maintenance Decision Support System (MDSS), created by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), helps road maintenance managers make critical road treatment decisions during the winter months. The MDSS offers a full suite of tools to aid maintenance managers, including pavement chemical concentration forecasts, optimized treatment times and strategies, roadway snow depth forecasts, and surface frost predictions.
