The Village of Skokie, IL had originally planned an extensive H1N1 response program for their estimated population. These plans were altered when a vaccine shortage hit the region. Local health leaders were told to ignore jurisdictional boundaries when treating patients. Through the work of city employees and just over 1,000 volunteers the city was able to administer or distribute to medical providers 40,850 H1N1 vaccinations over the course of nine weeks. They rose to the challenge so much so that 53.9% of the overall vaccine recipients were not residents of Skokie.
