Open Your Jobs to Veterans

How refreshing it was to listen to a Veteran’s Day speech by the President that contained true program support for returning veterans. What President Obama developed recently goes well beyond the old programs for separating soldiers that simply helped you with a resume and sent you on your way.

One of my favorite new programs is the development of a Veterans Job Bank. You can find it at NRD.gov. At this site, a returning soldier can not only search for jobs by location with key words, but by their MOS/MOC (Military Occupational Specialty/Code) as well. What a helpful site!

To take it a step further, I typed in my information to see if any local government positions (not just city management) listed. But to my surprise, nothing connected to local government jobs appeared.

Now, I know things are rough out there for municipalities as many of us cut back and have even institute hiring freezes. I am also aware that the site was just put up and is even a Beta version. But, I am sure that out of more than 18,500 cities, towns, villages and other such governments in the United States, there are jobs to be posted on NRD.gov for returning veterans.

For those of you with jobs to post on NRD.gov, here is the link: https://www.nationalresourcedirectory.gov/home/instructions_for_employer_participation.

I will be turning this link over to our Human Resources Department today and I hope you do too.

Steven - This morning President Obama signed a bill into law which provides tax breaks for employers who hire out of work veterans. Also included in the bill is a repeal of a 3% withholding requirement on government payments to most contractors. Steven Vinezeano Thank you Alex.

The Obama Administration has directly called for easing the movement from a military career to one in healthcare. Something similar should be pursued for city management.
