Strategies for Enhancing Political Astuteness

Thank you to all of you who attended the session and contributed, sharing your experiences and ideas. The ideas that were written on the flip chart are listed below:

·Frame the issue in terms others can understand

·Share background on issues

·Be clear about roles

·Listen, consider others’ ideas

·Foster relationships

·Share stories/history

·Remember “they” know it all – no matter where you stand

·Council knows what community wants

·Manager knows how to run the city

·Mutual respect for others’ subject matter expertise

·There are always differing views of “what is wrong”

·Relate to others’ experiences

·Make sure each Council and Department heads understand Charter –

·Make sure everyone gets the same information or opportunity to have/get the information

·Ask questions (Maybe instead of supplying answers)

·Schedule time to get together informally (over coffee?) to talk/improve relationships

These ideas came from your peers and mentors. Reach out to each other!
