Do you feel like the more experience you gain (okay, the older you get!), the harder it is to learn new things or try new experiences? If so, join Dr. Frank Benest at the ICMA Annual Conference for a session on dealing with professional and personal stagnation at mid-life. Relying on new brain research, you will explore how to promote adaptive change and self-renewal through learning strategies.
Session title: Learning as a Strategy for Adaptive Change and Self Renewal
Speaker: Dr. Frank Benest, ICMA Senior Advisor and long-time City Manager of Brea and Palo Alto, CA
Date: Tuesday, September 20, 2011
Time: 12:30-1:45 p.m.
Room: 202A
Frank's engaging speaking style combined with great audience participation made for a fantastic session. Frank asked us to share what causes us to feel stagnation at work and in our personal lives, and asked us what we do to promote learning in our lives. We only have two options when we feel stagnation--do something or don't. This session challenged us to Do Something!
Ideas: Shadow an employee, take a trip out of the country, take classes or lessons, actively seek out new ideas to implement at work and home, learn with intent, reflect on our learning, and seek out new experiences and interactions with a diverse set of people. Remember to involve all the senses, be present in the now, and try something even if you think you'll fail. Remember, everything is a pilot. :-)
