Annapolis, the first Historic District in the United States is a wonderful character town with a unique history to learn from. Thanks to Robert Agee, past City Manager for sharing his passion for the local history and significant events in United States history that occurred here.
Historic District
The establishment of the Historic District by the State of Maryland happened due to the foresight of local community members, despite the opposition of the City Council and commercial groups. The citizens called for a vote on the matter by petition and were successful, thus the Historic District was established by plebocite.
The establishment of the Historic District has turned around the economic decline and now a thriving tourist and service industry has been established.
What were the important historic events that occurred here?
Crucial to the establishment of a free and democratic government in the United States, General Washington, the most powerful military figure in the United States after the defeat of the colonial forces in the War of Independence travelled to the Maryland State House and gave his resignation, despite calls in the settlements for him to assume leadership. This paved the way for the fledging democratic government to be established.
