Visiting the Chesapeak Bay Foundation Leeds Platinum Building
14 April 2011 | 6:43 AM
The day started with a visit to the first Leeds Platinum building in the US. They had to create a new category for it ten years ago when it was built! Rob Agee, past City Manager at Annapolis gave us a tour and an overview of the mission of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The primary objective of the Foundation which was established by community volunteers is to improve the water quality and to enhance the environmental and recreational qualities of one of the largest inlets in the United States. While much of the past industrial pollution from the past has been cleaned up, nutrients and sediment now threaten the bay.
As a simple measure of water quality in the Bay, the Bernie test has become legendary. Long time Senator Bernie ?? who grew up in the Bay area questioned complex scientific reports. He wanted to be able to see his toes when he waded waist deep into the Bay, as he could when he was a boy. Now in his 90’s, the annual “Walk In” celebrates the Bernie test with the community turning out to walk into the bay to see if they can see their toes.
