By now, those of you at the conference must have seen all those service award ribbons. 25 years, 35 years, 45 years and everything in between. Approximately 450 dedicated local public servants are receiving awards for 25 years of service or more. What you haven’t seen are 10- and 20-year service ribbons. So, I want to call special attention to these 350 members , many of whom are receiving their first award this year. Ten or 20 years may not be as long as 45, but it is still pretty amazing. This is not just 10

The 2011 ICMA Annual Conference kicked off on Sunday evening with an electrifying opening general session that featured the University of Wisconsin’s Badger Band (and Bucky), a welcome from the Mayor of Milwaukee, Tom Barrett, and an inspired keynote presentation from recently-retired Vice President of Government Affairs for Harley-Davidson, Tim Hoelter. It was an exciting night, to say the least, but what really caught my attention was the renewed momentum of the "Life, Well Run" campaign. As Dave Childs pointed out in his presidential remarks, "now, more than ever, we need to promote the value of professional

Imitation being the highest form of flattery, I am borrowing from a friend's recent blog to ask the questions, where do you get your inspiration from these days . . . and how is that helping you be innovative? I really want to know, because it feels like some of the usual fall backs for managing in the proverbial worst of times have already been used up. As the three panelists--Dave Childs, Bonnie Svrcek, and Sam Gaston--at this morning's strategic partners breakfast noted, doing more with less and doing less with less are nothing new. Downsizing and even consolidating

So you've been asked a question by a council member that stops you in your tracks because you know it's an ethically-loaded question. Or maybe it's a complex situation and you just know that the wrong answer could damage your integrity. The advice when you find yourself between this rock and hard place: Always have at the ready a delaying response that buys you some time to consider your answer. (It can be something as simple as "That's an interesting request. I may need to seek the advice of a colleague on that one.") Your ultimate response needs to

BLOG POST BY: DON MCEACHERN, PRESIDENT AND CEO, NORTH STAR DESTINATION STRATEGIES , NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE Does your community have a brand narrative? Clients often ask me how they can maintain the strategic integrity of their brand reputation while communicating using a variety of marketing channels, particularly social media. This year at the 2011 ICMA conference I’ll be talking about how community leaders can join the digital conversations that consumers are having about their communities. A critical touch stone for leaders looking to deliver a consistent brand message in social media and elsewhere

The International City/County Management Association ( ICMA ) kicks off its 97th Annual Conference tonight, and CH2M HILL is spending the next few days with clients, colleagues and friends from local government. This is the 16th time I’ve had the opportunity to represent CH2M HILL at this conference (wow!), and it’s also my second year serving on the conference planning committee representing ICMA’s strategic partners . The ICMA staff, the planning committee and the local host committee have worked really hard to make this a great learning and networking event for city and county managers from North America

Blog post by: Don McEachern, President and CEO, North Star Destination Strategies , Nashville, Tennessee Remember the old days (okay, five years ago) when community leaders controlled the information that was disseminated about their communities. Even the introduction of online technology such as websites and email marketing didn’t change the facts; you were, for the most part, in charge of the conversation. That approach is called impression marketing because the communication channels you used – print media, outdoor, email marketing, public relations and online banner ads, etc. – were designed to make a certain

Don’t let the session title fool you. “Managers in Transition: Perspectives and Strategies” is not just for those currently between jobs. It is for every manager or aspiring manager who may face transition in the future, who are not quite sure what the next council or commission meeting will bring, or who are currently in transition. In other words, this session is for everyone! Join our panelists to hear their stories and ask questions. As one panelist said on a recent conference call, transition was nothing like he expected. Come to learn what to watch for, how

In the past year we’ve seen Cloud Computing come on the scene in a big way, revolutionizing how local government implements and uses technology. GIS (Geographic Information System) has especially benefited, as the cloud removes many of its traditional challenges, making it more affordable, faster to deploy, more widely available, and easier to use. The cloud revolution is here and Cloud GIS is a must-have technology for cities of all sizes. The future is clearly in cloud computing. Municipalities who’ve adopted Cloud GIS find relief for their overburdened IT staff, constrained budgets and technology adoption woes, and

When it rains, it (sometimes) pours. In times of heavy rainfall, sanitary sewer systems may not have the capacity to hold all the water entering the system, which results in sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), and combined sewer overflows (CSOs). Additionally, stormwater runoff that isn't properly managed can flow off the sides of buildings, and over parking lots and other impervious urban areas, picking up pollutants along the way and washing them into rivers and streams. Many local governments lack the financial and technical resources necessary to address these issues. The resulting noncompliance with regulations designed

If you're using a mouse to navigate around the desktop of your computer right now, you can thank IDEO . The Palo Alto firm has played a leading role in some of the most iconic designs of our time. In fact, they're now being asked by the Feds to help redesign government. How do they roll out hit after hit? By putting people at the center of the design process. This is harder than it sounds. Think about your community. The last time you renovated a city building or designed a new
