Students holding or earning a master's degree in public administration/management, public policy, public affairs, or related fields from an academic institution that is a member of the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (visit NASPAA for a list of member schools) are eligible to apply for the fellowship.
The degree will have been completed by late summer 2013 (including degrees completed in 2012). In some cases, degrees received prior to 2012 are acceptable. Candidates will be selected on the basis of their academic performance, demonstrated leadership potential, commitment to public service, communication skills, initiative, creativity, and positive attitude.
What’s after the application?
ICMA will notify all applicants if they have been selected as a finalist in February 2013 once the Advisory Board submits results. Finalists' applications will be routed directly to host local governments for review. Local governments will contact finalists directly to schedule interviews, starting as early as February, but as late as April and May depending on when they sign-up to host. If you are contacted by a local government, it is strongly recommended that you prepare for the interview as you would for any other job opportunity.
In general, fellowships begin in the summer/early fall (after graduation for current students) or at an alternative agreed-upon time by the fellow and the local government.
We are continually recruiting host governments and will update the full list of available locations as they join the program. Hosts have joined as late as June in the past and still hired Fellows. You can check progress in host-recruiting any time online by selecting the LGMF Placement Regions link on the right menu.
If you have any questions or if your contact information changes, contact lgmfprogram@icma.org or 202-962-3560.
In partnership with NASPAA, IHN, and NFBPA.
ICMA thanks NEOGOV for providing its automated hiring tool for the LGMF program to manage the online application, review, and placement process of the next generation of local government managers.
