Leading and managing local governments requires understanding the performance of a jurisdiction across a range of criteria. A key ICMA initiative is to help local governments use performance data for establishing goals and outcomes in budget decisions, for setting targets of performance, for comparing to and learning from other jurisdictions, and for communicating service and financial improvements to citizens. ICMA is driving this initiative in a variety of ways.
- The ICMA Center for Performance Measurement works with more than 150 jurisdictions who implement our comparative performance measurement program.
- ICMA works hand-in-hand with the National Research Center, Inc. to provide The National Citizen SurveyTM to local government leaders who want citizen feedback they can act on to improve their communities.
- We are also continuously measuring the impact of professional management of local governments—what we call the performance dividend of professional managers.
