Opportunities to serve the community and network: I completed Leadership Dubuque, a nine-month program to develop leadership and management skills in the community’s up-and-coming leaders. The culmination of the class was the 2008 Community Days of Caring, a two-day community-wide service event; I chaired the steering committee for the event.

Meaningful work: I have experienced what can be accomplished to help the community by being part of a management team, but have also gotten my hands dirty. I lead Dubuque’s effort to provide busloads of volunteers to our neighboring communities hit by floods and tornados.

Community leadership: Both communities are operated by talented professionals that serve Councils who truly are concerned about what is best for their residents. Dubuque has gained national recognition for its leadership in the sustainability movement, and I have gotten the chance to work on some extremely innovative and exciting projects in this area.

I’ve had a great experience living and working in both cities. Located on the Mississippi River, the region is beautiful and has an array of outdoor recreational activities. Being part of two communities that are experiencing positive growth has given me access to plenty of entertainment, cultural, educational, and community events.
