ICMA Student Chapters
MOUNTAIN PLAINS REGION
WEST COAST REGION
About the program
The goals of the ICMA Student Chapters are to introduce and integrate students into local government and the management profession and familiarize students with ICMA members, resources, and policies. Through chapters, we will also establish connections between ICMA, schools, students, state associations, and managers.
Program and Content
Content and program activities are a partnership between ICMA and the schools.
ICMA is creating program content that engages and excites current MPA / MPP students about the profession of city/county management. Through ICMA Student Chapters, we also hope to attract undergraduate students who are interested in public service, but may not be aware of career possibilities in local government.
Chapters also develop their own content. Chapters develop a charter, hold regular meetings, engage guest presenters, and engage with other chapters. Students might explore joint research/presentation opportunities, and attending the ICMA Annual Conference.
Student Chapters can help ICMA, by talking about local government and the profession. Some ideas:
- Reach out to undergraduate and high school populations, or even K-8
- Use social media to share, converse, and lead discussions
- Utilize Life Well Run or other ICMA resources as your tools.
Each chapter will have groups in ICMA’s Knowledge Network, where chapter members can engage with members from other universities as well as professionals in the field.
Starting a New Chapter
In order to start an ICMA Student Chapter, you will need:
- A chapter president
- A faculty advisor at the school
- An ICMA member manager
By establishing an ICMA Student Chapter, universities provide unlimited student membership to all students enrolled in the chapter. Schools, students or members interested in starting a chapter can e-mail email@example.com for details, or download the agreement and sample charter to begin the process now by visiting icma.org/startastudentchapter.
ICMA Student Chapters are part of ICMA's Next Generation Initiatives.
