The Cal-ICMA Coaching Program was selected as a case study at the International Leading Practices Symposium, held May 29-30 in Queensland, Australia. Co-sponsored by ICMA and the Local Government Management Association of Australia, the Symposium featured the Coaching Program as an exemplary initiative to accelerate the development of talent as local governments grapple with the wave of baby boomers retiring from public service.

Dr. Frank Benest, City Manager of Palo Alto and Co-Chair of the Preparing the Next Generation (PNG) Committee in California, and Kevin O’Rourke, former City Manager of Fairfield, California and member of the PNG Committee, presented the case study including lessons learned for other regions in the world that also face a demographic tsunami of retiring senior managers. As part of the Symposium, Frank and Kevin led attendees in discussing how their nations or regions could create similar talent development initiatives.

Symposium attendees included representatives from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, and the United States.
