In April 2007, the City of Carlsbad, CA, in conjunction with the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services, offered low-cost rabies vaccinations, dog licensing and microchipping.

A microchip is a small transponder, the size of a grain of rice, which is injected under the skin and remains there for the life of the pet. The microchip serves as your pet’s ticket home should it become lost as it contains information to help reunite lost pets with their owners. With proof of a dog license, dogs were microchipped for a one-time fee of $20, including the registration. There was no license requirement for cats, and the department welcomed rabbits for microchipping as well.

Moreover, owners who have never licensed their dog, or have allowed their dog’s license to lapse, had any late fees waived during the recent event.

Rabies vaccinations for dogs (four months or older) and cats (three months or older) were available for only $6. Dog licenses, which are required by law, may be purchased for one, two, or three years. In addition, spay-neuter coupons ($50 female animals and $25 male animals) were available to Carlsbad residents while the supply lasted.
