The city of Allen, TX (pop. 18,309) was recently awarded a grant from the Texas Department of State Health Services to expand an important senior program. The city has been an eCivis client since 2003, and uses Grants Locator to streamline the grant research process for Federal, Foundation and Texas State grants.

The grant will provide funding to expand a current program that has been in place since March 2004 at the Allen Senior Center for North Central Texas. The Center provides valuable support services for residents age 50 and over. The award, provided in the form of federal pass-through funding, was awarded by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The grant, totaling $44,628, will be used to support three components of the Senior Center:

1) the Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program, which incorporates range of motion, strengthening, and endurance building exercises in warm water pool facilities;

2) the Arthritis Self-Help Course, which teaches skills needed to build and carry out an individualized self-management program; and,

3) PACE (People with Arthritis Can Exercise),  which incorporates non-impact exercises, standing or seated, to improve strength, flexibility, and endurance.

The goal of the program is to reduce chronic pain levels suffered by senior citizens afflicted with arthritis. Through education and exercise, the Allen Senior Center will help enhance the quality of life for senior citizens throughout North Central Texas.
