Sunnyvale, CA Tops “25 Most Inventive Cities” List

SUNNYVALE, CA has topped the list of “25 Most Inventive Cities” in the nation. The survey was published online on TheDailyBeast.com website, a merger of Daily Beast and Newsweek.

The Daily Beast totaled the number of patent applications filed and the number of patents granted among the nation’s 200 largest cities. According to authors, each city was ranked based on its patents (applied and approved) per capita, creating a list showing the highest resident-to-inventor ratio. Data from the US Patent and Trademark Office and the US Census were used in the calculations.

Sunnyvale’s scores of 1,391 patent applications and 2,324 patents awarded per 100,000 population, were more than twice as high as second-place Fremont, which scored 686 and 1,068, respectively. Third-place San Jose scored 401 and 643.

Of the top 10 cities in the country, six were in California. The complete top 10 list ranks Sunnyvale, Fremont, San Jose, Irvine, Cary (NC), San Francisco, Seattle, Boise (ID), Pasadena and Plano (TX).
