Sarasota County opened an online website on Monday, July 25, that will enable citizens to revise and make comments on the county’s Water-Efficient Landscaping Code.

The wiki will be open for revisions and comments until 5 p.m. Aug. 22. It’s available online at the Sarasota County website, www.scgov.net, or at the wiki website at https://wiki.scgov.net. The wiki page includes instructions for participation. After submitting a valid email address and agreeing to follow a civility code, users will be sent a password by email. Users who participated in the county’s first wiki can sign in with their existing username and password.

The code covers landscape planning and installation, as well as water-efficient irrigation to establish minimum standards and to promote water conservation. The code was adopted in 2001 and was last amended in 2005. Many of the amendments are proposed to comply with new state laws.

Landscape watering consumes an estimated 50 percent of annual water use in Florida. The code is intended to benefit property owners in a number of ways, including:

  • saving a significant amount of money on water bills
  • decreasing the use of fertilizers and pesticides
  • reducing the amount of runoff created by over-watering
  • reducing pollutants carried by the runoff.

The community also saves energy used in pumping and treating water, gains improvements in water quality and increases the supply of water available for future users.

The wiki is an interactive website, which is an online opportunity for participants to collaborate in drafting policies or ordinance amendments that will be submitted to Sarasota County commissioners for their review. On the wiki, participants can add information and edit the policy statement or regulation. They also can make comments and add links to related information. The first issue on the wiki was proposed regulations that govern the redevelopment of older commercial properties.

After the wiki is closed, county staff will prepare a summary report for the commission on the wiki content. Commissioners will be able to view the wiki while it’s in progress, but will not participate in it.
