What State Associations Are Doing for Members in Transition

ICMA recently conducted a survey on Members in Transition (MIT) programs in state associations. Of the 38 associations surveyed, responses were received from 15. While only nine said they have formal programs, most offer some form of support to their members:

Financial help

·         80% of responding state associations waive membership dues for MITs

·         53% waive conference registration fees, and 20% provide partial waivers

·         47% waive conference meal costs, and 20% provide a partial meal stipend

Interim job assistance

·         39% of responding state associations encourage members to hire MITs for special projects or provide interim job leads (many times this is done through newsletters or websites)

·         39% of responding state associations send their MIT list to communities that are looking for interim managers

·         23% contact MITs when opportunities arise

Other services

·         46% have ICMA Range Riders in their states

·         25% provide complimentary publications or resources to MITs

·         25% assign a committee or staff member as a contact person for the MIT
