For public sector employees, interesting and useful work is more important than pay

The Public Service Research Panel at Rutgers University released its first survey results on career issues for public service professionals.

The Public Service Research Panel (PSRPanel.org) completed its first survey, the Winter 2011 survey, where 194 public service professionals from across the US found the following to be important aspects of respondents' current job.  Note: The results are in rank order by percent who said the aspect was a "very important" part of their job:

  • 68% An interesting job
  • 61% A job that is useful to society
  • 54% A job that helps other people
  • 48% Good opportunities for advancement
  • 43% Job security
  • 38% A job that allows working independently
  • 37% A job with flexible hours
  • 9% High income

So it seems, at least from the respondents to this survey, that the interest/moral dimension of working in public service wins out over money.

The survey is based on responses from 194 public service professionals from across the US who participate in PSRPanel.org, an online academic research panel organized by Rutgers University’s School of Public Affairs and Administration.

PSRPanel's next survey’s theme (Spring 2011) will be Labor Unions and Public Service.   For detailed survey results, or for information on participating in future surveys, please visit PSRPanel.org
